Lincoln International Business School (LIBS) master’s students have an opportunity to experience a one-year work placement as part of the two-year programme. Jan Tunley, LIBS Postgraduate Employability Officer visits many students on location to ensure that they are enjoying the placement, are fully supported, and progressing well. Rooppreet is on placement at the Mirchi Restaurant in Lincolnshire as Customer Services Assistant Manager and Receptionist, as part of studying MSc International Hospitality Management with Professional Practice.

As is often the case with the hospitality industry, Rooppreet explained that at the start of her placement she had been learning every task undertaken in the restaurant. Rooppreet learned to staff the reception, take orders in person and on the phone, serve customers, clear tables, ensure all food orders were ready on time (any deliveries must be within one hour), and cash-up at the end of the day. These last two duties are supervisory and, as Rooppreet learns more about how the business fits together to run smoothly, she will be keen to take on all trainee manager responsibilities. Rooppreet is being mentored in this by her managers, Sany and Tanjina.

Rooppreet had 5 years’ experience working in the front office of hotels in India and Dubai, with one year as manager. In her Assistant Manager role, Rooppreet intends to employ all her existing skills, and learning how to adapt them to the customer base in the UK.

Rooppreet says that she found it very different working in the UK, and was extremely nervous when she started, but that she feels far more settled now. Rooppreet says she is keen to use this opportunity to also improve her conversational English and that, although learning new behaviours and processes in another language is an additional challenge, it is benefitting her greatly. Rooppreet states that her placement is boosting her confidence so she will feel very able to compete in the UK job market.
