Lincoln International Business School (LIBS) master’s students have an opportunity to experience a one-year work placement as part of the two-year programme. Jomgee is studying MSc International Hospitality Management with Professional Practice.

During August, Jan Tunley, LIBS Postgraduate Employability Officer visited Jomgee on location at The Houblon Arms Luxury Hotel, South Lincolnshire, to ensure that he was enjoying the placement, was fully supported, and progressing well.

Jomgee had not worked full time prior to commencing his placement at the small luxury hotel and restaurant but, with a keen interest in business and hospitality, Jomgee opted for a year’s practical experience to provide a sound start to his future career. Based on his existing skills, experience and interests, Jomgee was offered the role of Kitchen Technician and Commis Chef, which included duties around Health & Safety and record keeping. Additionally, as part of the post, Jomgee was put in charge of stock management, stock rotation and fridge rotation ensuring that the business is compliant with law and maintains its 5* hygiene rating.

In his first couple of months Jomgee became a trusted employee and bonded well with the chef, who is his main mentor. Jomgee commented, “although I felt nervous at first, I soon settled in, and everyone is very friendly and welcoming. I am eager to work, and keen to learn”. He advises other students considering a placement to ensure they convey their passion and enthusiasm to their potential employer along with their desire to learn everything possible about the people, processes and regulations in order to develop their skillset.
