Chioma, a Lincoln International Business School (LIBS) MSc ‘International Hospitality Management with Professional Practice’ student, has taken up the opportunity of a one-year work placement as part of her two-year programme, Chioma has joined Lincoln’s Olé Olé Tapas Restaurant.

Chioma is an experienced chef and aims to move up the management ladder while still working with the food that is her passion. Chioma was very quickly put in charge of her own section, which is rare for new staff, but her transferable skills had shown her to be very capable. Chioma is very much enjoying her role. Her supervisor is the head chef whom Chioma describes as an excellent, patient teacher, who encourages her to stretch herself. Chioma is learning how to work with staff and manage a busy restaurant schedule, at the same time as performing the very hands-on role of chef.

Each time Chioma masters one area of the business, she is given another to learn, and says she is learning a great deal about the business and has bonded really well with her team. Chioma is very much enjoying the international aspect of working in the UK, within a Spanish restaurant, and with a Brazilian chef.

Chioma said she believes that, for a placement to be truly successful, students should choose something that is their passion. Chioma thrives in the hectic kitchen, relates very well to customers, and is good at resolving issues. Chioma’s advice? “If you love what you do, it is much easier to adapt and learn.”
