Piyush, who is studying MSc ‘International Hospitality Management with Professional Practice’ at Lincoln International Business School (LIBS), has taken up the opportunity of a one-year work placement as part of his two-year programme. Piyush is working for De Vere Hotels at the Cotswold Water Park in Cirencester, Gloucestershire.

The LIBS Postgraduate Employability Officer, Jan Tunley, visited the hotel and spoke to Piyush and his manager, Lizzie, to ensure that the placement was fully supported and progressing well.

Piyush has hospitality experience from India, so brought a wealth of transferable skills. He has been learning about a lot of differences in the UK though – such as asking customers about food allergies and ensuring the chef is aware. Piyush is impressed by the way managers at all levels “pitch in” and help with any task when the situation requires it. His workplace really feels like a team, with everyone pulling together to provide the best guest experience.

Lizzie explained how Piyush has been learning various jobs so he knows how everything functions together and has the hands-on skills they all require. Six months in, he is now ready to take on further responsibility. Piyush will be donning a suit for work going forwards, attending supervisor training (also run by Lizzie), learning management-level system processes, end-of-day procedures, events management, guest relationships, and general supervisory skills.

Piyush is held in high regard by the hotel manager, and Lizzie says he has accrued a huge bank of information in his six months so far. Piyush has achieved this by asking questions about everything, and so actively taking charge of his own learning, and earning his place at the level of supervisor.
